Obituary of Bernice A. Johnson

Oakfield - Bernice A. Johnson, 87, of Oakfield, passed away peacefully wither her family around her at the Crossroads House, in Batavia, NY. Mrs. Johnson was born in Batavia on August 18, 1929, to Michael and Josephine (Oles) Chudoba. Bernice and her husband, the late James Osborne Johnson, ran a dairy farm in Caledonia in the 1950's. They then moved to Berlin Maryland and worked on a beef farm. She also worked for the telephone company in Berlin, MD. They returned to the area in 1960 to care for her parents. She worked at GTE Sylvania and ran Ozzie's Tire Sales and Services with her late husband. She also served as a cook at the Alabama Hotel. Bernice was a member of the VFW, Ladies Auxiliary and was a tireless volunteer for the many functions which benefited the Veterans. She was an excellent seamstress, but her greatest joy was cooking, baking, canning and making pies for the family and charitable causes. She was a tireless gardener, bird feeder and cat rescuer. Survivors include five daughters, Joyce (Arthur) Klein, Sally (William) Hilchey, Barbara (Dennis) Yousey), Betty (James) Palmateer and Sharon (Michael) Lindsley; a brother Raymond Chudoba; a sister, Josephine Kukoski; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Carr; 9 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late James Irvine Johnson and sister of the late Michael Chudoba and Edward Chudoba. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for donations to Crossroads House. Private burial will be in Mumford Rural Cemetery. Arrangements were completed by Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home of Oakfield.
