To the entire Pillo family, ours prayers are with you during this time but I wanted to share that Mr Pillo will never be forgotten. My brother and I were highly influenced by him, encouraged, mentored and loved. Angelo will always be a part of our family as Vince names one of his sons Angelo. The trips with him were wonderful, the conversations I can clearly remember and he was always encouraging people in whatever their dream was. Many of the things I do in life were formed early in life by the support and caring love Angelo shared. May God be you all as he accepts Angelo into heaven.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of this warm light on Earth. Mr. Pillo taught us more than just the flute, trumpet, or clarinet, but empathy, compassion, cooperation and collegiality. He knew just the right amount of strictness and humor to keep us interested and in line. He also knew when music might be a passion or deep interest but not a calling (I am forever grateful for his brutal honesty that music should not be my vocation- I found medicine!). He was absolutely one of e best teachers I have ever had and include two pictures from one of my favorite memories from high school- our band trip to DC. Rest In Peace, Mr Pillo and sending my love and sympathy to his family that many happy memories fill their hearts during this sad time.

Where to start?! Since meeting Ang and Sheila our lives have been richer... through laughter, music, great conversation...Our entire family is so grateful for all that they have shared with us!
One observation that I'd like to emphasize is this...for Mr. Pillo music education wasn't confined to any particular age, genre or any physical location. He gave lessons to me (I picked up the trombone after 25+ years!) and to my children. Our church's Band of Renown included church members and community members from 9 to 99. He shared all styles of music, from marches to jazz to ABBA. There was one constant....it had to sound GREAT! Perfect, even.

How do you begin to write a tribute to such a great teacher?
And Mr Pillo was so much more than a music educator.
- He taught us about good pizza (Bocce Club) and bad pizza (AFS pizza sale)
- He taught us that you can win a parade without a fancy band uniform, and that sometimes your parade will get rained on
- He taught us that its okay to make a mistake. Just keep going, because no one will notice
At the risk of sounding sappy, and apologies to the movie Mr. Hollands Opus
"There is not a life in this room that you have not touched, and each of us is a better person because of you. We are your symphony <Mr. Pillo>. We are the melodies and notes of your opus. We are the music of your life"
Like others, I still march and play in concert bands.
My condolences to the family.
Ange may have an eternity of rest measures here on earth, but he's organizing a band in heaven.

Mr. Pillo was my junior and senior high band instructor. He talked me into playing the tuba, and then gave me his personal instrument to play. I learned so much about the joy of music, and excellence, from him. He was my favorite teacher, and a beautiful human being! He was loved by all of his students. I will miss him. I'm so sorry for your loss. Robin Prouty Day, Byron-Bergen class of 87

The passing of Ange brings both sorrow and the joy of great memories. He was the kind of teacher that had a positive impact on all the students that came before him. He taught us to be better musicians and also better people. When we weren't in class(and sometimes when we should have been) we could be found in the music area. Our lives revolved around it. He inspired us to set goals. We raised money and went on trips to interesting places. We started marching in white shirts and black pants and evolved into a uniformed marching empire that we were all proud of. When you love what you do you will never work a day in your life. I think this could be said for this great man. We are all better for knowing him. My condolences to his family and friends. Tom Nesbitt

In general I have a poor memory. But I remember 4th grade was when we were given the opportunity to take up an instrument. The senior band came over to the elementary school and played a couple pieces to get kids interested. They played 25 or 6 to 4; and the theme to “Mission Impossible”, directed by Mr Pillo. I was inspired. I will never forget playing “March Slav” when I got to senior band. I remember a bunch of us from school having a “painting party”, and painting the inside of his new house on Roberts Rd. Years later I marched with him in the Alexander Fireman’s Band. Years later I became the Alabama town supervisor and Ang would alway have some wisdom to bestow on me. Wether a student or a friend in life, he was always willing to help you be, the best that you can be. God gave him many gifts. Two of them were the gift of music and teaching. Guy Hinkson class of 79

Sorry to hear this Carl. I've been in Lockport for 50 years and try to keep up with Batavia, but we are in N Carolina winteers and it is harder. Non-the-less I hope that you are well, though I know that Margaret has preceded us, and fond memories at BHS have been stirred. I Mass will be said for all of you, if and/or when churches reopen here in Durham. Rest assured that I am still blowing a horn, and wish we could have a brass ensemble for wakes. Jim Alrutz

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of my favorite teacher and person that influenced me to pursue music as a career. I fondly remember his guidance and smile every time I pick up my trumpet (almost daily). My sincere condolences to his family and everyone who's lives he touched. A fitting lyric to a great man:
The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band - Dan Fogelberg

Mr. Pillo was an amazing teacher and a true friend to all students. He projected an energy and a sincere love of music that made even the toughest students smile. I still refer to simple concepts as "Mickey Mouse" thanks to him. Both of my children are musicians (one at Eastman...); I am 100% certain that Mr. Pillo's positive energy and love of music has carried forward to the next generation for hundreds of families. What an amazing life.

Will always remember this moment from our high school graduation day. Saying goodbye to our favorite teacher Mr. Angelo Pillo. RIP Mr. Pillo <3
So sad to hear this, absolutely loved this man! Brings back so many memories of our Byron-Bergen band days. Our band trips to Albany, Washington DC and the band exchange with Carey, OH. The fun times we had at the carnivals after marching in the parades. He was the best band director ever and will truly be missed <3 My sincere Condolences to your family. Praying for you all. He was one special man!

Mr. Pillo had a huge impact on my life. I have always loved music and he made me love it even more. He always had a smile on his face and he truly cared about all of his students. He gave me the confidence I needed to become the amazing flute player I became because he was my teacher. I will never forget our band trips and when we marched in parades. He was an amazing man and he was not only my teacher but also my friend. He will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I will always be grateful for the lessons Mr. Pillo taught us in band, many of which I use in my daily life. His positive influence continues as we share our love for music with others. Just last week I was discussing wonderful memories of band trips with my sons as they are about to start marching band. Thank you for sharing your husband and father with all of us. Our thoughts are with your family.

I'm sure my small voice is one of many who can share these sentiments. Mr. Pillo was an incredible person, teacher, mentor, and friend. A large part of who I am today is shaped by his influence on my life. For that I am ever thankful to him. He took the time to care about his students, not just teach us about music. He taught us how to care, to work with and relate to others, to set goals and hold high personal expectations, he taught us how to commit to something. His leadership provided us with opportunities we otherwise might not have had. I still recall our trip to England as one of my favorite memories of youth. Throughout my career as a creative professional, I've relied on the honesty of radical candor and critique as a way to positively influence my work and the work of my peers. I attribute my career success to that and I learned that from him. Most of all he helped me learn how to be a kind and caring person, how to be friend, he modeled it by example each and every day. Again, I'm one of many, his influence on this world is great and wonderful. My deepest sympathies to family and friends, you are in my prayers. I'm thankful for being one Mr. Pillo's students.
